"I wouldn't be surprised if we leaned that direction again." "We're having a blast. Any hints at what fans can expect for the first new ZZ album since 2003? "Since the music is a return to the early ZZ Top roots, I believe there's always that Tex-Mex accompaniment", Billy says.
Where is the project at these days? "We finished tracking, going into the next mode of mastering", says Gibbons. Astronaut and ZZ pal Michael Fossum, currently headed to the International Space Station on a Russian spacecraft, is carrying a copy of the track, which will show up on the new album. A few weeks ago, fans learned that a new ZZ song, "Flyin' High", was doing just that - in outer space. He realizes the foundational piece of this great American art form of the blues penetrates so much of popular music, he said 'just turn it up and let's go'". "Rick has successfully brought in his particular piece of magic in offering a few suggestions", he adds, "and basically stepped back and he said 'you really don't have to get much better just do what you do'. "We have stepped out and joined forces with a notorious character within the record world. "This year is gonna be a banner year on a number of levels but we're throwing our hat in the ring." As Hennemusic initially reported last September, ZZ's new project was produced by a music industry legend. The tour’s title is derived from both their new album and their new ZZ Top Tres Hombres Whisky offered from Balcones Distilling recently launched in Texas."We're preparing for the release of ZZ Top's next recorded work - soon to hit the streets - hopefully by the end of 2011", ZZ guitar legend Billy Gibbons tells Houston's Fox 26. The classic rockers have announced their Raw Whisky Tour, a 50+ date North American tour that launches at the end of May and continues through the summer and into the fall. “The Gruene Hall session was a satisfying return to our roots and a very special circumstance that we’re delighted to share with the friends and fans who have stuck with us all this time.”
“‘Brown Sugar’ has been sweetening our concert sets for many decades now, so it seemed like the right song to kick off Raw,” Gibbons shares. The album is issued “in righteous memory” of Dusty Hill who passed away last year. The album was produced by Billy F Gibbons, engineered by Jake Mann and GL G-Mane Moon and mixed by Ryan Hewitt. Raw, the totality of their efforts there, will be available on 180-gram vinyl, CD and through digital platforms.
When the three members of ZZ Top gathered at Gruene Hall, they were in each other’s line-of-sight, making for a very organic recording session, part of which is seen in the film. Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and the late Dusty Hill gathered there to record in a spare, bare bones way and the result of those efforts is “Brown Sugar” along with eleven additional tracks that comprise the Raw tune stack. The historic venue dates to 1878 and has been in continuous use as the oldest, continually operating joint in the state. Raw was recorded and filmed for the Grammy-nominated Netflix documentary, That Little Ol’ Band From Texas, in the intimate setting of the famed Texas honky-tonk, Gruene Hall between Austin and San Antonio. ZZ Top’s “Brown Sugar,” penned by Billy F Gibbons, should not be mistaken for the Rolling Stones song of the same title, the latter of which was actually released three months after ZZ Top’s First Album.
The new version is the opening track on Raw, which itself is an homage to the band’s early days. “ Brown Sugar” was a key cut on the very appropriately titled ZZ Top’s First Album that was released in January of 1971. ZZ Top has reached back to its very early days with the first track to be released from their forthcoming Raw album, out July 22nd from Shelter Records through BMG.
